Transportation Clerk
Basic Purpose
Responsible for coordinating outside carriers and company drivers to meet required shipping and delivery schedules; Maintain effective communications with customers and customer service regarding deliveries and service.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
1. Schedule deliveries and select carriers based on rates and reliability.
2. Maintain customer contact concerning delivery times and schedules.
3. Communicate daily with customer service regarding order changes and transportation issues.
4. Communicate daily with distribution and production staff regarding load-out timetable.
5. Report all issues that may jeopardize on-time deliveries to the Transportation Manager.
6. Report daily information to management regarding each load, trucking company, total cost and cost per pound (Truck Leave report).
7. Set up load-out schedule for shipping staff.
8. Tender all loads based on geographical balance, delivery times, and cost.
9. Mentor transportation dispatcher(s) and clerical staff.
10. Schedule shuttle drivers to meet shipping/route schedules.
11. Maintain personal on-call availability 24 hours per day, 7 days per week in the Transportation Managers absence.
12. Perform other related responsibilities, as needed, to support business objectives.
13. Willing to work an off-balance schedule to ensure we have departmental coverage when needed.
Skills/Knowledge/Abilities
· High School Diploma or equivalent and one to three years of related dispatching experience.
· Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills
· Strong oral and written communication skills. Good judgment and problem resolution skills.
· Strong computer skills, ability to effectively understand and utilize software(s) to coordinate shipping and support business objectives.
· Ability to successfully manage multiple priorities in a fast paced environment.
